SPACEFRAME
Presented on November 2, 2003

Peter Pearce, the principal of Pearce Research and Design, has taken a "Design Science" approach to architecture on every scale since the 1950s. He is best known for his classic book from 1978, "Structure in Nature is a Strategy for Design," published by MIT Press, in which he was one of the first to detail the importance of biological and crystalline structures as models for efficient, modular systems for large-scale architecture. He demonstrated an unprecedented architectural design embodied in Biosphere 2 by combining both closed-system geodesic and open-system spaceframe architectures based on his own unique universal node system, Min-A-Max. He holds nine patents and is considered one of the world authorities on spaceframe architecture. In his early years, he worked with Charles Eames developing furniture systems and later worked with Buckminster Fuller on an early, unpublished version of "Synergetics." Spanning the micro to macro world, Pearce's high performance designs and writings continue to inspire such diverse fields as engineering, chemistry, nanomedicine, geometry, biotechnology, architecture, engineering and information design. This Porcelainia vessel, based on the cuboctahedron, the original spaceframe, is dedicated to Peter Pearce and his continuing contributions to the fields of design, art, architecture and science.
