This piece is named for the birthplace of Thales (640-546 BC), a teacher of Pythagoras and the first Greek mathematician to unify geometry and mathematics with astronomy. The 24 parts forming its outer surface came from the truncations of two cuboctahedra formed when two cubes were truncated to form pieces #787 and #788.
