The epitaph on Arete of Cyrene's tomb called her "the splendour of Greece" with the "beauty of Helen, the virtue of Therma, the Aristippus, the soul of Socrates and the tongue of Homer." During the 4th century B.C. she was the head of the Cyrenaic School founded by her father, Aristippus. She was a prolific writer whose more than 40 books covered the philosophy of Socrates, and topics such as agriculture, natural science and education.
