Copernicus' De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium - "The Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres" was a landmark book in history. Published in the year of his death, (1543) Copernicus' De Revolutionibus gave a revolutionary new blueprint for the planetary system. The earth was no longer in the center of the cosmos, but was in a celestial sphere itself, spinning on its axis every twenty-four hours and circling around a distant sun. To Copernicus all of the planetary motions could be elegantly explained by attributing movement to the earth itself.
