The Science of the Earth's Surface, Claudius Ptolemy's treatise from thesecond century BC, was the first definitive work on the geography of thespherical earth. Ptolemy's maps in Geographia were laid out by threedifferent methods of projection, provided coordinates for eight thousandplaces, and introduced geographical latitude and longitude. Many centurieslater, Ptolemaic maps were reconstructed and the first Latin translation ofthis text, with maps in the 15th century became one of the most influentialbooks of all time.
