This piece is named for the Greek geometer, Eratosthenes (276 BC - 197 BC) who was known for his contributions to the better understanding of prime numbers. A contemporary of Archimedes, he was also the first to accurately measure the Earth's circumference using trigonometry. As director of the library, Eratosthenes compiled the first index to the scroll collection, his "tetagmenos epi teis megaleis bibliothekeis, "the scheme of the great bookshelves."
