This piece is named for the great geometer, Menelaus (70 AD to 130 AD). Menelaus's only surviving book, "Sphaerica" was the most important early contribution to spherical trigonometry, essential to both astronomy and navigation. He was the first to write down the definition of a spherical triangle and identify its geometric properties.
